Geek Chic — Barbie

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Thanks to Gadgettes, I found out today that Barbie is now a GEEK.  After an online vote, it was decided that Barbie’s new career would be Computer Engineer.  This is Barbie’s 125th career (wow, can we say indecisive) and the first that was decided by an online vote.

Technology Today: Meet the Motorola Droid

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

The long awaited day has finally arrived.  Droidmas has finally come.  I am now the proud new owner of a Motorola Droid.  No longer a coveter of my friends’ and family’s smart phones.

I have had my new phone for 2 whole days now and I am feel like I have a good feel for it.  So I will share my first impressions of the phone.  I am sure over time some of these will change, but for now, here’s how I like it. (I LOVE it).

I know most people won’t recognize all the fabulous web/tech celebrities but this is still a fun video.  Who can pass up puppies:

Technology Today: Ravelry

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

As I finish  knitting projects (most recently a baby sweater and set of  wash cloths), I record my new projects in Ravelry.  Ravelry is a perfect union of two of my strongest areas of interest: knitting and the internet.  It is an online community for knitters and crocheters that goes way beyond social networking. Ravelry allows its users to post and track projects, search patterns, store information about stashed yarn, search forums, keep a list of needles owned, join groups, see what others are making, comment on other users’ projects, and much much more.

Techonology Today: I Love My Netbook

Friday, July 31st, 2009

While I was on my blogging hiatus, I added a new gadget to my collection:  A red Lenovo IdeaPad S10, 10 inch netbook.  I have been wanting a laptop for some time now, but the idea of lugging around a 15 inch or 17 inch behemoth never appealed to me.  They are far too heavy and unwieldy.   So I began to covet the Lenovo X-series laptops that are direct competitors to the Macbook Air.  They have a big screen, are super light weight, and have lots of power; however, they are ridiculously expensive.  This is where the new Lenovo netbooks came into the picture.

Matt mentioned off-hand one night when we were discussing “the lap top of my dreams” that I should just get a netbook. After some thorough online research, I agreed with him whole heatedly, and eight months later I absolutely love my Lenovo s-10.

So if are a designer, developer, information architect, project manager, writer, editor, marketer, or anyone else who makes websites, even you freelancers, I encourage you fill out the survey. It will only take a few minutes.

You like me, you really like me

Monday, June 9th, 2008

For those of you who don’t know, the title of this blog post is an often mis-quoted reference to a 1985 Sally Field utterance when she won and academy award.  I can honestly say that I understood the awe and shock that propelled Sally Field to speak these much parodied words this morning when I woke up and realized my blog had received 1600 hits overnight.

Technology Today: Linux — A new user’s review

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Ubuntu LogoI have been a Microsoft user for a majority of my life. I started out with a 66 megahertz computer running MS-DOS on a very fancy black and green monitor. However, I recently became a self-proclaimed Linux lover. For those of you who might not know, Linux is an open source operating system that competes with Microsoft Windows and Apple’s OS X. My first experience with Linux left me with a bad taste in my mouth, but the distribution of Linux known as Ubuntu 7.10 (aka “Gutsy Gibbon”), the version prior to the current version of Ubuntu, has impressed me enough to convince me to completely switch my personal computer to Linux. It has been a fascinating adventure, and I’ve learned a lot about the inner workings of my computer.

Cell phone number change? — Tell me what you think

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Tomorrow Matt and I will be renewing our cell phone plan with Verizon and getting new phones. With this comes the option to finally get local cell phone numbers, which has not been a possibility in the past. Matt and I have had Virginia cell phone numbers the whole time we have lived in Indiana because we share a cell phone plan with his parents. However, Verizon has now changed their policy, and you can have phone numbers from different states on the same phone plan. This has caused quite a dilemma for me.
