Geek Chic — Barbie

Thanks to Gadgettes, I found out today that Barbie is now a GEEK.  After an online vote, it was decided that Barbie’s new career would be Computer Engineer.  This is Barbie’s 125th career (wow, can we say indecisive) and the first that was decided by an online vote.

The new Barbie comes with chic pink glasses, a pink laptop complete with binary code (no clue what it says), a blue-tooth headset, laptop carrying case, and watch.  She is also wearing pants, albeit sparkly pants, but this is the first time I  personally have seen Barbie come from the store with something other than a skirt.

As a female geek working in the technology world, I am not sure what I think about this.  On one hand, it is exciting to see Mattel attempting to make being a geek cool and encouraging little girls to “think outside the box”.  On the other hand,  Barbie is still Barbie, and I doubt it will be long before she returns to her fashion diva ways.

What do you think?  Does this make you happy or mad?

To read the official press release about the new doll check out the Barbie website.

And the moment I know you have all be waiting for… I give you Computer Engineer Barbie:

    After some further online research, it seems that the binary on Barbie’s computer actually says Barbie over and over again:

    01000010 = B
    01100001 = a
    01110010 = r
    01100010 = b
    01101001 = i
    01100101 = e

    I am impressed that Mattel actually took the time to figure that out.
