Technology Today: Meet the Motorola Droid
Sunday, February 14th, 2010The long awaited day has finally arrived. Droidmas has finally come. I am now the proud new owner of a Motorola Droid. No longer a coveter of my friends’ and family’s smart phones.
I have had my new phone for 2 whole days now and I am feel like I have a good feel for it. So I will share my first impressions of the phone. I am sure over time some of these will change, but for now, here’s how I like it. (I LOVE it).
Snow Day
Saturday, February 6th, 2010
I spent a great day today snowed in because we got about 10 inches of snow here in Richmond. It was a beautiful, wet, dense snow that stuck to everything and made for some amazing photos.
I also started another new knitting project from “One More Skein“. I am knitting myself a new washcloth using the Pencil Sketch pattern. I started using one of the knitted washcloths I made for the Co-op sale, and I fell in love. It is so much nicer than using the store-bought kind, so I am making myself a second. This way I can actually wash my first washcloth

Technology Today: Hacker House
Friday, January 22nd, 2010I am currently sitting in a room full of fellow geeks at a “Hacker House” party hosted by a friend of mine. While most of the conversation revolves around programming and other parts of geekery that I am not as well versed in, I am actually finding it more interesting than I expected. I have even been able to introduce friends to new Linux programs I use and teach a fellow female geek to use Picasa.
What an unexpectedly fun evening of geekdom.

Live on the Internet

Technology Today: Ravelry
Thursday, September 10th, 2009
As I finish knitting projects (most recently a baby sweater and set of wash cloths), I record my new projects in Ravelry. Ravelry is a perfect union of two of my strongest areas of interest: knitting and the internet. It is an online community for knitters and crocheters that goes way beyond social networking. Ravelry allows its users to post and track projects, search patterns, store information about stashed yarn, search forums, keep a list of needles owned, join groups, see what others are making, comment on other users’ projects, and much much more.
Why I want a blackberry
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009I am due for a new phone in February, and after playing with Matt’s smartphone I can’t wait to get one myself. I am a sucker for the fancy touch screen interface and can’t wait to check my email, update facebook, and tweet all from the comfort of my cell phone. However, the video below touches on a few reasons that even if Verizon gets the iPhone, I will not be getting one.

Text messaging while driving equals death… or worse
Monday, August 17th, 2009I recently saw a disturbing but powerful video out of the UK that will be used in driver’s ed. classes to show kids the dangers of texting while driving. I have put the video in the post below, but be aware that it is quite gruesome and potentially difficult to watch.
I am torn about the effectiveness of a video like this. It reminds me of the train crossing videos I was subjected to in driver’s ed. that show people being destroyed by trains while trying to race the train. They were disturbing and to this day I am nervous crossing a train track. On the other hand, I stop and look both ways and treat the train tracks with respect.
Techonology Today: I Love My Netbook
Friday, July 31st, 2009While I was on my blogging hiatus, I added a new gadget to my collection: A red Lenovo IdeaPad S10, 10 inch netbook. I have been wanting a laptop for some time now, but the idea of lugging around a 15 inch or 17 inch behemoth never appealed to me. They are far too heavy and unwieldy. So I began to covet the Lenovo X-series laptops that are direct competitors to the Macbook Air. They have a big screen, are super light weight, and have lots of power; however, they are ridiculously expensive. This is where the new Lenovo netbooks came into the picture.
Matt mentioned off-hand one night when we were discussing “the lap top of my dreams” that I should just get a netbook. After some thorough online research, I agreed with him whole heatedly, and eight months later I absolutely love my Lenovo s-10.
